When a team of volunteers from Marshall Memorial United Church visited the Dominican Republic last month, they arrived with impeccable timing…. read the whole story here. Ancaster News
October 2007, a team of 16 employees from Spruceland Millworks Inc, travelled from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to help build a water cistern for the village of Los Algodones. We were all aware of the hard work involved and that we were going into a very poor village; what we didn’t expect was the warm welcoming from Elio and Lena, along with John and Jane. We didn’t expect to develop life long friendships or to be so welcomed by the people who live in the villages. Our hearts were heavy when we first saw the living conditions and their water supply; however what a peace in your heart when you see the work of the Samaritan Foundation building homes for the poor and knowing that these homes give hope and a future, not only for the parents, but for the children. When we left, there was a feeling of joy and accomplishment and we knew that the water cistern would soon be supplying this very poor village with “free” fresh, clean, safe water. This was an experience never to be forgotten by any one person on this team and it will forever change our lives.

Since October of 2007, we have seen 17 people travel to the Sosua and Puerto Plata area of The Dominican Republic. The two teams who made up this group were impacted both personally and eternally with what they saw and sensed there. The amazing people, culture and history combined with the desperate needs and spiritual darkness of the area. Although our focus was mainly construction of a medial facility in the Village of Nazareth; our teams also had experience in other villages through participation in sports activities; Vacation Bible School, literature distribution; Film Outreach, Food distribution and the Presentation of medical supplies and personal items to many who were sick in the hospital. All of this happened in a whirlwind 6 days and was worth every minute !. All in all, it was a life-changing week for all involved. So much so, that we have another team of 12 Young Adults bound for the D.R. in February 2009.
Words can not express how thankful we are to our hosts and guides through the network of Missions Organizations and Missions Families who so diligently work there. Special thanks to Elio Madonia and John Huizinga of Fundacion Samaritano and partners Phil and Donna Williams with Servants Heart Ministries. We have made friends with you folks for life.
Send your teams; these folks are the real deal.
